As Chief Fire Officer of Highlands & Islands Fire & Rescue Service, I would like to thank you for visiting our website. It is our intention, that by looking around the site, you will gain a greater appreciation of how our Service is structured and how we carry out our role.
The website contains a wealth of Fire Safety advice and information for you to view; this being one of the many ways in which we strive to help make the Highlands and Islands a safer and better place to live.

Our Service is the most northerly in the UK, covering a geographical area the size of Belgium. We provide a fire, rescue and community safety service to the communities of the Highlands, the Shetland Islands, the Orkney Islands and the Western Isles.
We employ in the order of 1500 staff, who are committed to providing a professional and skilled emergency response to the communities that we serve. Our firefighting crews are spread across a network of 115 units, comprising 1 wholetime station, 95 retained stations and 19 Community Response Units. These crews operate an extensive fleet of emergency vehicles, providing appropriate resources to effectively respond to operational incidents across our large Service area. Our Headquarters is based in the Highland capital, Inverness, and we deliver our local services through 4 geographical districts which incorporate the 4 constituent Authorities forming the Fire Authority. Our dedicated support staff maintain our operational frontline, with all areas of the organisation working together to protect our communities.
I hope you enjoy looking around our website and visit again. We continually strive to make improvements in all aspects of our Service and would welcome any comments or feedback on the website, via the “Contact Us” link.
