The Training section comprises 18 dedicated staff with specialist skills to develop all our personnel and is based in Inverness with training facilities at Invergordon and Fort William.
Their aims and objectives are to support the development of our workforce so that their range of skills and abilities match the needs of the Service. Our training policy is determined at Headquarters, with the majority of ongoing training for Wholetime and Retained personnel being carried out by command, district and watch managers.
In common with all other Scottish Services, Wholetime personnel joining the Service receive their 13 week Trainee Firefighter course at the Scottish Fire Service College, while retained personnel attend an in-house 1 week course at our Service Training School.
Our training instructors are involved with several courses programmed throughout the year, which consist of such courses as Initial Trainee Firefighter training, Initial training in Road Traffic Collision and Refreshers, Initial Breathing Apparatus training and Refreshers, Helicopter, Water Awareness, Community Response Unit and Command Competence courses.
Our Driver Training Section has been approved by the Driving Standards Agency as an "Accredited Driver Training Centre" for Large Goods Vehicles "Register of Instructors". The four full time instructors provide instruction on such courses as Appliance Familiarisation, Emergency Fire Appliance Driving and Large Goods Vehicle initial courses. We also have an internal driver examiner who undertakes examinations within the Service.
Progressive training courses and seminars are arranged for organisational staff at the Fire Service and Scottish Fire Service Colleges. The types of courses undertaken at these establishments include Incident Command Foundation, Mines Rescue, Swift Water Technicians, Gold and Silver Command Competence, Media and Flood Management etc.
