Driving Ambition
Driving Ambition is an interactive and informative roadshow which sees S5 and S6 pupils visit different sets over a three hour period. Each set focuses on a specific road safety element and is intended to give advice to young drivers or future drivers through a multi agency delivery of road safety information.
The day begins with the screening of Northern Constabulary's Just Another Day DVD, featuring Donald Geddes and is given to all pupils as a single group.
It tells the story of an Ullapool man whose high speed crash left him blind in one eye, partially sighted in the other and forced to live with a host of other medical conditions as a result.
The pupils are then divided into smaller groups and directed to individual sets delivered by each agency in turn.
The sets include:
Driving Instructor/Driving Standards Agency
A PowerPoint presentation on how to:
- Apply for a driving test
- What to expect during the test
- How to pass a driving test
-
Under The Bonnet
A mechanic speaks about:
- Changing a tyre and checking tyre pressure
- Check windscreen wipers and screen wash levels
- How to check oil levels
Enforcement
This input is delivered by Northern Constabulary and pupils are informed of:
- The legalities of driving and modifications
- The consequences should they commit an offence
Red Cross
Pupils are given an input on the first responder scheme. Topics covered include:
- Airway maintenance
- Basic first aid for the first person at the scene of an accident
Road Safety
An interactive set which gives road safety advice and includes:
- Hazard perception game
- Sped limit information and general information about young drivers
Fire & Rescue
Operational Firefighters deliver a presentation covering:
- The role of the Fire Service at the scene of an accident
- The equipment that they use at accidents
- Safety advice to anyone involved in or witnessing an accident
- Contacting Emergency Services and best information to give
For the final set, all pupils come together to watch the next chapter of Donald Geddes' DVD which shows the long term impact the crash has had on his life, how he has managed this and the long term implications that a collision can have.
