Picture of Wick River

Our Service is the most northerly in the United Kingdom covering a geographical area of approximately 12,000 square miles, which is characterised by contrasts of landform, population and demography.

The joint Fire Board of Highland & Islands consists of four local area authorities:

  • Highland
  • Orkney Islands
  • Shetland Islands
  • Western Isles

Demographically all four are similar in that they can be characterised as having a population hub and a hinterland of scattered small communities.
Each is geographically different but all share elements in common, rugged coastlines, hilly or even mountainous terrain and areas of difficult living conditions with widely scattered populations.

Our area is divided into four districts:

District A: Orkney and Shetland
District B: Caithness, Sutherland and Ross & Cromarty
District C: Inverness & Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey and Western Isles
District D: Lochaber, Skye & Lochalsh

Locally based, multi-role professional managers based in 10 District Offices throughout our Service area, provide Community Risk Management, Operational and Training support to their designated stations and surrounding communities.
